When would I need colorectal surgery?

You may need colorectal surgery if your symptoms don’t improve with nonsurgical treatments or you have bleeding, discomfort, or serious complications.

Southwest Surgical Associates has extensive experience performing colorectal surgery for conditions such as:

  • Anal fissures
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Diverticular disease
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Rectal and colon polyps
  • Rectal prolapse
  • Rectocele
  • Anal warts
  • Constipation
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction
  • Pruritus ani
  • Pilonidal disease

Your surgeon recommends the best type of surgery for your condition.

What type of colorectal surgery might I need?

The colorectal surgeons at Southwest Surgical Associates perform many types of surgery. A few examples include:

Resection

During a resection, your surgeon removes the diseased part of your colon and then reattaches the two healthy ends.

Colostomy

If you need to have all or a significant portion of your colon removed, a colostomy creates a way for waste to drain through an opening in your abdomen.

Rectopexy

A rectopexy repairs a rectal prolapse, which occurs when your rectum falls out of its normal position and protrudes through the anus.

THD hemorrhoid treatment

Transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) cuts off the arterial blood flow to a hemorrhoid using an absorbable suture. Without blood, hemorrhoids shrink, and the tissues return to their original position.

Do colorectal surgeons perform a colonoscopy?

Southwest Surgical Associates performs colonoscopies. During this minimally invasive procedure, they guide a long, flexible scope through your rectum and large intestine (colon). The scope holds a camera that transmits magnified images from inside your colon, allowing your surgeon to:

Diagnose and treat the cause of symptoms

During a diagnostic colonoscopy, your surgeon identifies the cause of symptoms such as:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Excessive gas and bloating

They may diagnose and treat many possible conditions, such as diverticulitis, colon blockages, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Screen and treat colon cancer

Your provider does a screening colonoscopy to detect and treat colon cancer before you experience symptoms. A colonoscopy allows them to find and remove polyps. Since colon cancer begins in polyps, eliminating them prevents the disease. If a polyp has already turned cancerous, removing it cures the disease as long as the cancer hasn’t spread.
