LUMPECTOMY

General & Colorectal Surgeons serving the Greater Houston area

What is a lumpectomy?

A lumpectomy is a surgical procedure to remove abnormal or cancerous tissue from your breast. This type of surgery is also known as breast-conserving surgery because the surgeons remove only a portion of breast tissue, including the diseased tissue and some healthy tissue nearby.

You might be a candidate for a lumpectomy if you have early-stage breast cancer to prevent cancer cells from spreading.

In addition to removing cancer, the Southwest Surgical Associates providers also focus on maintaining the natural structure and appearance of your breast during a lumpectomy.

What happens during a lumpectomy?

During a lumpectomy, the surgeons at Southwest Surgical Associates may first use diagnostic imaging technology to locate the tumor.

Using minimally invasive techniques, the surgeons make a small incision over the area to remove cancerous tissue and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue. They may also make additional incisions over nearby lymph nodes to remove them if there’s a risk for the spread of cancer.

Your surgeon can reposition the remaining breast tissue before closing the incisions. They apply a clean bandage to promote healing and reduce your risk for infection.

In many cases, women who undergo a lumpectomy also receive radiation therapy to destroy any remaining cancer cells. The providers can discuss your options for radiation based on your individual needs.

How long does it take to recover from a lumpectomy?

Since everyone heals differently from surgery, the Southwest Surgical Associates providers can discuss what to expect during your recovery at your consultation.

Typically, you can expect to need a few days of rest for your incisions to heal. If the surgeons also remove lymph nodes, you may need several more days of downtime before you can resume low-impact activities.

The surgeons can manage any pain you have and teach you how to care for your incisions to prevent infection. They also monitor other post-surgical issues that can occur after a lumpectomy, such as breast tenderness or numbness.

Your scars may initially feel hard but will soften over time. As you continue to heal, you shouldn’t see any changes in the physical appearance of your breast.
